Stump grinding

A stump grinder is a powerful piece of equipment with a rotating cutting disk lined with sharp, hardened teeth. The operator positions the machine over the stump and gradually lowers the spinning wheel into the wood, grinding it down layer by layer.

  • The grinder typically reduces the stump to 6–12 inches below ground level, though deeper grinding is possible if needed.
  • The process produces wood chips and mulch, which can either be left on-site or removed.
  • Large surface roots near the stump can also be ground down, but deep root systems are usually left to decay naturally.

Forestry mulching

A forestry mulcher (also called a mulching head) is typically mounted on equipment like a skid steer, excavator, or dedicated tracked carrier. It has a high-powered rotating drum or disc fitted with cutting teeth that can:

  • Cut down trees and brush
  • Grind vegetation into small pieces
  • Spread the resulting mulch evenly over the soil

The machine works continuously, turning standing vegetation into a uniform mulch layer in a single pass.
